How Nether Portals Work
Traveling in the Nether is the fastest way to travel in Minecraft. Every 1 block traveled in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld.
Linking Portals
To link portals perfectly, build the Nether portal at the exact coordinates calculated above. If you build it too far away, it will generate a new portal in the Overworld instead of linking.
The Y Coordinate
The height (Y) doesn't affect the math (X/8, Z/8), but the game tries to find the closest portal. Try to keep Y coordinates somewhat similar to avoid connecting to caves.
